- Proven coal reserves: About half of India's coal reserves are proven


- Indicated/probable coal reserves: 42%


- Inferred coal reserves: 8%


- Eastern and south-central India: Coal

deposits are primarily found in these regions


- Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh: Accounted for almost 70% of the total known coal reserves in India


- Lignite coal reserves: 46.02 billion metric tons (50.65 billion short tons) as of April 1, 2021


- Proven lignite reserves: Only about 16% of India's lignite reserves are proven


- Indicated/probable lignite reserves: 56%


- Inferred lignite reserves: 28%
